Whether its peppy numbers like ‘Badtameez Dil’, ‘Pappu Can’t Dance Sala’, ‘Lat Lag Gayee’, or soulful numbers like ‘Kaise Mujhe Tum…’, versatile singer Benny Dayal has proved time and again that he can ace it all with ease.

Ahead of the World Music Day on June 21, the multilingual singer spoke to Bombay Times about the post-pandemic changes in the music industry. “I definitely believe that there is a new rise in the digital platform as far as music is concerned. Since the last one and a half years, movies haven’t been released and as a result a lot of independent music and independent artistes have been emerging, which is a great thing because evolution happens in many different ways. I feel that the music industry is evolving to build a stronger, bigger and more defined independent circuit with people who are writing their own music creating their own music and not waiting for anybody to release it for them, but are just using the social media platforms. They are also using digital platforms to let people and fans know that they have got their music out.”

Benny feels that a lot of streaming platforms have also started encouraging musicians even if they are doing just covers that are made by youngsters. “It needn’t be huge music videos but at the same time if it is endearing and if it is close to the person’s heart and if they can actually connect to this kind of music, it works. There are different kinds of formats – even when people can’t go out and shoot videos, people are making videos at home, and editing it extremely well and putting it out there for people to view. So I think that is a great thing,” he says.

The last 15 months have not seen many theatrical releases of Bollywood films, but Benny believes that the Hindi film music scene has definitely not taken a back seat. “It will emerge once more. It is just a short period of time when we are all recovering and healing from the pandemic.”
